Why is Humic and Fulvic Acid so Important For Us and Our Animals?

Nature is wonderful, and truly has all the answers we need - when we learn to ask the right questions and interfere with it as little as possible! Therein lies the main problem, in that most of our food supply, and indeed our wider environment, as now been interfered with and contaminated to such an extent, that we need to work harder than ever to keep ourselves and our animals healthy. Many essential substances, such as humic and fulvic acid, that were an essential part of nutrient and energy transfer within the food chain, are now sadly depleted. In today's modern western world, unfortunately we need to proactively work to keep our bodies (and those of our animals) free from contaminants and harmful substances, to remain healthy.

What is Humic and Fulvic Acid?

Humic & Fulvic acid are derived from humus, the top layer of the soil. This humus contains ancient seaweed, plants, vegetation and fruit trees that have been compressed over millions of years. It has been known for years that this humus is essential to plant health, but it is also essential to the health of all life including us mammals.

The right combination of plant matter, minerals, pressure and temperature has created the humic substances (see below) which are highly effective in detoxing the body of heavy metals, pesticides and other toxins, while at the same time providing the body, at a cellular level, with essential trace minerals that are now lacking from normal soil, plants and any kind of food. But why are trace minerals lacking? Alas ‘modern’ farming practices and the use of chemical pesticides and herbicides means that many of the microorganisms that were present in the soil, that then helped to decompose decaying vegetation etc. have been destroyed, thus breaking this whole cycle of transferring nutrients back into the food chain.

Two important substances can be extracted from Humus: Humic Acid and Fulvic Acid. You may also have heard of Humin. Humin is the substance that remains once the humic and fulvic acid have been extracted from the humus. It basically has the same properties as humic acid, but it’s a waste product, and much less effective.

What is the Difference between Humic and Fulvic Acid?

Humic and fulvic acids are both humic substances (along with humin). Fulvic acids are a component of humic acid with a smaller molecular weight. They work in tandem to help boost plant health and increase crop yields. Healthy plants means healthy animals that feed off the plants! This basic principle of the food chain is so important - if the correct substances are missing from the plants, then it is impossible for them to be present in us animals. Fulvic acids can be thought of as the railcars that carry vital nutrients from the soil into the plant. You will see below how they both work in the body and all the amazing benefits they can bring!

Most humic acid also contains some fulvic acid. In our product (each will vary) the Humic provides additional support to the intestine and fulvic provides additional detox and better delivery of vitamins and minerals. We will explain below which is present (and why) in each of the products we offer. You will see that most research has been done on fulvic acid, and just to reiterate, this is one of the main components of humic acid.

Why don't we / our animals get enough minerals from our food? Why do we need Humic & Fulvic Acid supplements?

Ensuring we, and our animals, get adequate minerals are essential for every aspect of health, like bone development, heart health, eye health, digestive health, mental health, to ensure other nutrients such as vitamins and enzymes can work in the body. Minerals are responsible for carrying out many chemical reactions and other functions of the body.

There are many reasons why we can’t get enough minerals from our food. The two biggest reasons are the onset of large scale commercial agriculture, which uses soil depleting methods, and the extensive use agricultural chemicals, mostly fertilizers and pesticides.

100 years ago, farmers used to put rich natural compost back into the soil as fertilizers. They used to rotate crops and let fields rest and heal. But since our food production system has become so commercialized, it’s no longer possible for farmers to put back nutrients into the soil on such a large scale. In addition, the use of pesticides and herbicides suppresses the plants natural immune systems, and kills many of the microorganisms present in the humus. If these microorganisms are not present doing their job breaking down organic matter into its constituents, including essential minerals, this means that these minerals are no longer available to the plant hence the whole food chain breaks down.

We, and all animals, are evolved to consume Fulvic & Humic acid through vegetables & other plant matter. However,as discussed above, the depletion of the humus layer means that we, and our animals, are unable to get enough fulvic and humic acid from a good diet alone.

Both the Fulvic acid in Humic Acid and Pure Fulvic Acid transport large amounts of a wide variety of minerals, including trace minerals, that are now deficient in most food sources. You can't absorb these trace minerals from anywhere else! Fulvic acid is a generic name, just like humic acid. This means that there are several products called fulvic acid. But not all products have the same quality. A number of rules of thumb to determine the quality of fulvic acid:

For pure fulvic acid, the colour must be pale yellow. The colour indicates the purity;
Fulvic acid must be as unbound as possible so that it can bind to nutrients. A good way to determine the purity of fulvic acid is taste. Fulvic acid should be tasteless.

Fulvic acid makes the nutrients we consume more readily available by all our bodies cells. This is crucial to health. Because the fulvic acid has a very small molecular weight, it can pass easily through the cells protective membranes, bringing nutrients, minerals and vitamins in the right quantities to exactly where they are needed. It can actually transport over 60 times its own weight in vitamins and minerals into cells [1]! It also improves the absorption of nutrients via the digestive system. In summary fulvic acid increases the retention, absorption, and efficient utilisation of nutrients in foods and supplements hence improving the overall health and functioning of the body [1].

Fulvic acid can penetrate every cell of humans, animals and plants through its unique characteristic and transports nutrients such as those from food, vitamins, herbs, enzymes and supplements to the right cells. Once the nutrients have been delivered, fulvic acid takes any toxins present in the cells, such as pesticides and heavy metals, out of the cells ans ensures they are excreted from the body, either in stools, via the skin or via the lungs (as we exhale). This is a MUST for every animal and human.

Fulvic acid at cell level: transporting nutrients

Our fulvic acid is 100 percent natural, liquid, pure and an extremely light molecule. These properties and structure make the fulvic acid an excellent transporter of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, trace elements and metals.

Pure fulvic acid is unbound. That means that it does not have any minerals and metals attached to it (when you take it). Fulvic acid is capable of travelling from cell to cell, releasing nutrients and absorbing metals.

- Fulvic acid is also called the transport molecule.

Fulvic acid and detoxification: It binds heavy metals and toxins

Heavy metals and pesticides are often found at binding sites of cells. This is the main reason that heavy metals and pesticides disrupt the cell balance, the immune system and the absorption of nutrients, minerals, vitamins and trace elements. Fulvic acid can bind heavy metals and pesticides thanks to a chemical binding process (chelation). The toxic substances are excreted via the stool, skin and the lungs. This makes fulvic acid a powerful detoxifier / detoxer. Fulvic acid can also be used as a detoxification treatment to cleanse / detoxify / detox the body.

In short, fulvic acid has the following positive properties:

1. Fulvic acid improves the absorption of nutrients
- Fulvic acid is transporter. It binds vitamins, minerals and trace elements and transports it through the body. This improves the absorption of nutrients. Therefore feeding fulvic acids will enhance any other remedies and supplements or organic nutrition that you or your animals are using.

2. Fulvic acid discharges heavy metals & pesticides
- Fulvic acid is a natural chelator . This means that it binds not only to organic material, but also to inorganic material. This also transports heavy metals & pesticides from the body. This is so important, as we known in today’s world it is difficult for us to avoid the chemicals in our environment and on our food. Until this changes (and it is estimated that it will take at least 50 years from the cessation of using pesticides and herbicides to rid them from the environment) then fulvic acid will give you and your animals the protection it needs, along with sensible lifestyle choices! Quality is Key (as always)!

Quality & Production Process Matters!

Like in everything, the method of extraction / processing of humic & fulvic acid is key to its quality. Many types of humus are sold. The effects however may be very different due to, for example, the composition and/or the age of the humus and the method of extracting the humic and fulvic acids. We only work with the very best suppliers. The positive characteristics of our humic and fulvic acid products include:

- originated in the Cretaceous period (+/- 40 million years old)

- soluble in water at a pH level of 6 and low calcium content

- contents of humic acid is 52% and of fulvic acid 12% (measured following the procedure of the International Humic Substance Society)

- high solubility, which makes it easy to absorb in the body

- very low dosage required, at just 1 gram per 200 kg body weight

There are several types of fulvic acid available in terms of quality, so knowing that you are using ‘the real thing’ is vital. Often the product is presented as fulvic acid but if it is processed incorrectly then this can dramatically affect quality. One way to know if you are using a pure products is to assess the taste and colour. Pure, unfettered fulvic acid is tasteless and has a golden yellow colour.

Our suppliers have a unique fermentation process to successfully extract (without damaging) the fulvic acid from the humus. This takes about 3-4 months, the fulvic acid is dissolved by the elements of the humic acid. The great advantage of this process is that the fulvic acid can bind to various elements that are ingested. This improves the absorption of the nutrients (by plant, animal and human) and removes the toxins and heavy metals.

What else does Humic & Fulvic Acid do?

We have discussed above how minerals are essential for every aspect of physical and mental health. Minerals are essential for working together with other nutrients such as vitamins and enzymes, and for carrying out many chemical reactions and other functions of the body.

When something starts to breakdown in your body, or or not work properly, which we see as health issues (physical and mental), it can almost always be associated with a mineral deficiency. In addition, and crucially, humic & fulvic acid stabilises stomach microflora, inhibits pathogenic bacterial growth & mould, and detoxes mycotoxins, heavy metals and chemicals, including pesticides, from the body. We have detailed below some of the key benefits:

1. Remove pesticides & heavy metals from the body

Humic acid (including fulvic acid) has shown to break apart toxic pesticides, such as paraquat and glyphosate and help remove them from the body. The heavy-metal binding abilities of humic acids have also been exploited to develop remediation technologies for removing heavy metals from wastewater. An excellent read for more information on this is “The Toxin That Came to Dinner” by David Sandoval.

This is a HUGE problem for us and our animals - only now is the scale of pollution our food with glyphosate becoming apparent, and all the associated health effects. Having products for us and our animals to protect us from this is therefore crucial.

2. Enhances mineral transfer

Humic and Fulvic acid act as dilators increasing the cell wall permeability, allowing easier transfer of minerals from the blood into every cell in the body including those hard to reach places such as bone and cartilage (Source Kreutz and Schlikekewey 1992). As we have discussed above fulvic acid can carry 60 times its own weight in vitamins and minerals into the cells! This means that by supplementing with fulvic acid you will greatly enhance the effectiveness of any other products your animal is ingesting, whilst at the same time cleansing contaminants from their body.

3. Boost the immune system and protects cells against viruses

In-vitro studies with Coxsackie A9 virus, influenza A virus, and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) have shown that Humic substances are effective against naked and enveloped DNA viruses.”

(Source: Klocking and Sprosig, 1972, 1975; Thiel et al., 1977)

It is known that humic is antiviral especially against rhinoviruses (Enviromate, 2002) and various others.

4. Relieve skin conditions (such as sweet itch, urticaria, rash, allergies etc.) and heal wounds faster

Used externally as masks, sprays, gels, poultices and baths Humic & Fulvic Acid are highly efficient in supporting any kind of skin problem. One study found a greater than 90% success rate with using fulvic/humic mineral baths for humans with skin ulcers. A 1991 study found this same effect on internal ulcers.

(Source: Yuan, Shenyuan; Fulvic Acid, 4 1988; in Application of Fulvic acid and its derivatives in the fields of agriculture and medicine; First Edition: June 1993)

5. Help to heal gastric ulcers

The highly effective minerals & trace elements of both humic and fulvic acid help heal the stomach lining & mucus membrane of the digestive tract.

6. Stress Management

Humates have been shown to reduce the production of stress related hormones (Enviromate, 2002). This will obviously have a knock on positive effect on all aspects of health, as we know that stress is a major factor in all diseases.

7. Anti-aging & Dementia

Hospital studies in China show that elderly patients, ages 60-90, when treated with fulvic acid, regained appetite, slept better, and became more energetic. Other hospital studies coming from India show that fulvic acids are considered to be a powerful anti-aging therapy that also able to help with symptoms of dementia.

8. Humic Acid & Cancer

Patients with cancer causing tumors of the esophagus had 100% success rate in preventing tumor progression into the cancerous state when treated for two years with a humic extract solution.

(Source: Yuan, Shenyuan; Fulvic Acid, 4 1988; in Application of Fulvic acid and its derivatives in the fields of agriculture and medicine; First Edition: June 1993

9. Reduce pathogenic bacterial growth & inhibit mould growth

Humic acids have been shown to inhibit pathogenic bacterial growth and mould growth, decreasing mycotoxin levels, which leads to improved gut health (Source: Humin Tech, 2004HuminTech., 2004. 10. Liver support

Humic acid has been sown to improve liver function and protect the lover from damage (Lotosh, 19991).

Fulvic acid detoxifies the body and releases waste that the body has to leave. This process allows some users to experience mild side effects such as headache, muscle pain, and / or mild gastrointestinal complaints. Serious side effects with the use of fulvic acid have never been reported.

Although the detoxification itself will have a beneficial effect on you and your animals well-being, the side effects can lead to discomfort in some people / animals. If they experience these discomforts, it is best to choose to adjust the feeding guide downwards. The process generally takes a little longer, but the side effects will disappear.

- Heavy side effects with the use of fulvic acid have never been reported

Humic and Fulvic acids are essential to many aspects of maintaining health. Unfortunately, for many reasons described above, these essential compounds are now absent from our food chain, and so supplementation is required to put back what nature has currently lost. We would recommend these products, which are safe for long term use, for ALL humans and animals, but please don't take our word for it. Try them yourselves and see the results for yourself.
