Applied Zoopharmacognosy

PLEASE NOTE: Even though I am not currently offering in-person Zoopharmacognosy sessions, I do offer amazing Zoopharmacognosy online training courses.

Alternatively, please do contact me as I may be able to recommend another practitioner near you. You can also see my Holistic Health Animal consult.

Applied Zoopharmacognosy is the process of enabling animals to self-medicate on natural products (including herbs and essential oils). During a consult, the animal is offered the natural remedies, and they are allowed the time to decide which ones they need at this point in time.

The animals innately know which remedies they require to bring their mind and body back into balance. Captive animals are not able to seek out the natural remedies they would find in the wild, so this process enables us to bring nature to the animal; it gives the animal control over their own healing and nutrition as they would have had in the wild.

It is a very bonding experience for animal and carer. During the consult, Catherine will offer your animal a selection of the natural remedies prioritised for their physical, emotional or behavioural needs. While offering these, she teaches you, the owner, how to read your animal’s responses so that you can continue to work with your animal towards a sustainable healthy lifestyle change.

Iridology

In-person and distant consults available.

Iridology is the science of analysing the delicate structures of the Iris (the coloured part of the eye). This ancient practice can be used as a nutritional guide and can detect a wealth of information that can assist an owner in making appropriate management decisions for their horse.

Iridology is a gentle and non-invasive method that involves using a torch, magnifying glass, and camera to examine the irises of your horse. The examination process is completely pain and stress free for your horse, and it’s best conducted in a stable or field shelter to minimize light exposure to the eyes.

What does Iridology show?

Through this technique, I can identify various marks within the irises, providing valuable insights into the horse's current and past health conditions, including the state of organs and body tissues. Iridology can reveal genetic strengths and weaknesses, as well as inherited behavioral and physical characteristics.

It offers an overview of inflammation levels, toxicity, acidity, and the health status of different systems and organs. Additionally, it can indicate issues related to spinal and neuromuscular injury or tension, and underlying pathways to certain conditions.

However, it’s important to note that iridology does not provide medical diagnoses or identify specific diseases. It cannot determine the cause of injuries, identify conditions that have been treated under anesthesia (due to the disruption of neural pathways to the brain), or detect pregnancy, life expectancy, tumors, leukemia, gallstones, kidney stones, rare genetic conditions, or bacterial, or fungal infections. Some of these limitations are due to the body classifying these conditions as normal or due to a lack of research in these areas.

How can it help?

Following the consultation, I may suggest adjustments to your horse’s management, as well as recommend supportive herbs, oils, or remedies. If the issue appears to be structural, I might advise a type of bodywork that could be beneficial. As a qualified Red Light therapist I am able undertake bodywork if needed.

Through the iridology results, you will know where to start when offering remedies for self-selection, and what remedies might be appropriate for ongoing support and a healthier lifestyle for your animal once their immediate needs have been addressed.

Often owners are unable to determine the root cause of a physical or behavioural problem. Iridology, which is completely non-invasive, can often provide the missing link the information to inherited weaknesses / strengths, areas of inflammation or stress etc. to equip owners with the information to making lasting change in the health and happiness of their animal.

In-person and distant consults available.

PLEASE NOTE: For an in-person Iridology consult, please first email [email protected] to check availability.

Horses must be in a stable or field shelter for the examination, as sunlight can cause reflection. For a distant consult, a high resolution close-up photograph of each eye must be provided via email prior to the session. Please contact me for advice on how to do this effectively.

Animal Communication

Animals obviously do not speak in the same way that humans do, but they are constantly trying to communicate with us.

As most humans are not able to understand an animals attempt to communicate with them, the animal then has to employ more and more extreme methods, often ones that we humans see as ‘behavioural problems’ to try and make us listen!

Over the ages many humans have lost their ability to communicate with animals using our feelings, however, we can re-learn this skill, and everyone has this innate ability.

A communication with your animal can help in many ways, including to uncover any missed signals for any issues your animal may have and make appropriate adjustments to yours and your animal’s lifestyle to ensure more understanding and healthy communication.

Catherine will tune into the animal’s thoughts and feelings and relay these to the owner in human terms. This can give great insight into any physical or emotional issues.

Animals are so sensitive to their humans and it can sometimes surprise owners to receive messages from their animals about themselves! This beautiful ability can lead to healing of both animal and owner, resulting in a much deeper bond.

For a distant consult, two photographs must be provided prior to the consult. One focusing straight on the face with the eyes on show and the second with the whole body. Photos must be as recent as possible, no older than one month (unless the animal has passed over).

PLEASE NOTE: For an in-person Animal Communication consult, please first email [email protected] to check availability.

Catherine Edwards - MBA, MSc (hons) Biology, Dip. Equine Iridology; Dip. Applied Zoopharmacognosy; Level 3 Red Light Therapy, CT2 Animal Communication

"Catherine came to visit the ponies at our rescue centre for the first time 2 years ago – we were already using herbs but Catherine has been able to greatly enhance our knowledge, skills and techniques. Catherine is amazing…so supportive and encouraging and happy to answer any questions you might have. It’s her knowledge, approach and combination of techniques which is so special! She has helped us with self- selection, iridology and red light therapy – a range of therapies to address and manage emotional issues, structural issues and physical challenges - all of which are critical to address as part of the rehabilitation process.

Iridology has been such a crucial tool to understanding our ponies’ needs and keeping them healthy. Catherine’s assessment and recommendations for getting our management plans right for each pony means that now the laminitic ponies who used to be kept off the grass for long periods of time in the summer are back grazing on the same routine as our other non-laminitic ponies. As long as we follow our management plan we have no laminitis…this is such a gift…and beyond what I ever thought we would achieve! It has helped us to now concentrate on rehabbing more complex cases - we currently have a pony who would be labelled as “Cushings” – the vet tests and iridology show that his condition is not Cushings disease. In fact his lymphatic system is the issue and we have been able to nutritionally support him through these issues into a significantly improved state of health that we can regularly reassess. We have been so impressed that I am undertaking the iridology practitioner course myself!
Thank you Catherine!

"My 8 year old Appaloosa Ozzie has had physical issues since he was three when he was diagnosed with pedal osteitis. When he was six the seemingly 'genetic bad card' he had been handed had moved up to his SI joint causing a lot of pain. On my vets advice I waited until he was seven and a half before having him physically tested to see if his growth plates fusing would have made him safe to re-back. During this time he had really good nutrition to support him and was only walked out or shown in hand. Because I wasn’t sure whether he was out of pain or not and all of my horses had had glyphosate sprayed on them by a neighbouring farmer which made them very ill, I didn’t want to take any chances so I asked Catherine to come and do an iridology consult, self-selection (zoopharmacognosy), red light therapy and a structural assessment with him. She found a lot of markers in his eyes and recommended a vet check, which we did. The results of the iridology were very accurate, and it was great to see how he selected for what had been found with the iridology assessment. That resulted in me adding Manna probiotic and MSM to his natural organic diet. My vet recommended high dose Vitamin C and I supplemented all of the horses diet with self-selected herbs and oils. So far, Yarrow and Peppermint oil are popular and Turmeric, Seaweed, Barley Grass, Hawthorn berry, Rosehips and Fenugreek, they are all selecting these on a regular basis. Just because we are into the winter now, I decided to add in Naturally Animals Hedgerow mix, it has so many good things in that usually they can self-select from the hedgerows around their field. The vet came out to re-check Ozzie after 7 weeks of Vitamin C and several months of Manna, MSM and the self-selection, he is much better, heavier, shiny coat, his gums are not blue and yellow anymore, but a much healthier pale pink. I am hoping that this improvement will continue and I am very grateful that I have such a wonderful open minded vet, Catherine and Naturally Animals who found the problems in his eyes and provided Ozzie with top-grade herbs and supplements. He has also greatly benefited from Red Light Therapy and Mastersons."

"Although we have used Catherine’s herbs , oils and Manna Equine for 2 years now she came out to do a full consult on our horse who was struggling with box rest and we were struggling too. We had been through 4 months of stress at this point and the more his box rest went on the more we couldn’t even go in his stable to groom him as he was showing us, his owners, his anger and frustration. Catherine selected herbs and oils for him based on his own selection and he was so calm and well behaved throughout . It was lovely to just spend 2 hours being able to be around him! It has given us something positive to do when we come down to the yard too as we can spend time grooming him now and then doing the herbs and oils which he seems to love so helps to turn a very difficult situation into a more positive interaction.
Most importantly Catherine helped me at the session ( mum , groom , financier and all round worrier, as this is my 16 year old daughter’s horse). I really can’t thank her enough for the help, advice and ideas that will help support us through this tricky time . We WILL get him through this and I SO look forward to seeing them back riding together next year . Enough said!
Thank you Catherine. Xx"
